The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Joins in the U.S. 242 Independence Day Celebration

The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Dr. Alie Kabba has called on the U.S. Government to continue supporting Sierra Leone, particularly President Julius Maada Bio’s ‘New Direction’ agenda in restoring hope and opportunity in transforming the lives of the people of the Republic of Sierra Leone.

Dr. Alie Kabba, in his address at the U.S. Embassy in Sierra Leone, conveyed warm congratulations and fraternal greetings from His Excellency, Dr. Julius Maada Bio, the Government and people of Sierra Leone to President Donald Trump and the people of the United States of America on the occasion marking their 242nd Independence Day anniversary. He lauded the ideals of democracy which form the fundamental pillars of the U.S.A. and have been of tremendous benefit to the world by influencing how countries run their respective governments. ‘Sierra Leone’s experience is consistent with the ideals of the forefathers of the United States of America, and therefore as a government, we want to assure you of our commitment to democratic governance and respect for the rule of law’, Dr. Kabba added.

‘As we pursue a New Direction of change in Sierra Leone, I want to once again assure the US. Government of Sierra Leone’s further commitment to practice an inclusive government as we endeavor to bridge the regional and tribal divide that pervades our country’, he concluded.

The United States Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Ambassador Maria Brewer in her brief address, explained the objects of the signing of the Declaration of Independence by their founders on July 4, 1776 that committed to a bold new experiment, noting that they believed that: a new country could be formed based on an idea of freedom; the government should be democratic; and personal liabilities should be valued by protecting freedom of religion and speech. ‘Sierra Leoneans likewise share our values of freedom and democracy as marked by the recent national elections in March this year’, she added.

‘Our two nations are united by history, common values and a commitment to democracy’, Ambassador Maria Brewer concluded.

Present at the US Embassy to commemorate the 242nd independence anniversary of the US were: Ministers and senior officers of Government, Ministries, Department and Agencies, Members of the Diplomatic and Consular Corps and other distinguished personalities.
